FUT Ratings Refresh FAQ:

  • Upgrades AND downgrades apply to new non-inform players found in packs. Non-IF players in your Club will not receive an upgrade or a downgrade.
  • If an upgraded player’s new OVR rating equals or surpasses his existing first in-form’s rating, his IFs will get an upgrade.
    • An exception is made for lower rated players with significant upgrades.
    • Does not apply to Movember or Ultimate Scream items.
  • If an upgraded player’s new OVR rating does not equal or surpass his existing in-form’s rating, his IFs will not get an upgrade.
    • However, if an upgraded player with an existing IF gets upgraded across Quality tiers (eg. Silver to Gold), his lower-quality IF will not get an upgrade. This preserves the in-form’s high value.
  • Downgrades to non-IF players will not affect their In-Forms or special items, should they have any.

Winter Upgrades Prices & Market Analysis

Winter Upgrades Investment Hype

Every year the hype around Winter Upgrades grows towards the end of January. Many YouTubers and other influencers talk about the player cards that will likely get upgrades.

In addition, the investing community looks to buy IFs whose golds cards will likely get an upgrade in hopes that their upgrade will be large enough to bump up the rating of the IF. This hype does two things…

First, many people sell the gold cards that are likely get an upgrade. This increased supply combined with the fact that many stay away from buying the gold card in anticipation of the upgrade leads to a solid dip in the price (especially for high priced cards).

The opposite happens to the informs. Since their cards will automatically get upgraded if the winter upgrade is large enough (barring some other technicalities about gaps in IF rating), investment hype usually pushes the prices of these IFs up.

When UP Cards are Released

Once the upgraded cards drop, the non-upgraded gold cards drop in price a bit more as people panic sell. This panic selling can be so intense that it provides an opportunity to snipe the non-upgraded cards and hold until their prices stabilise for a profit.

Of course, if the IFs get upgraded, assuming they haven’t been overhyped as an investment (causing their price to over inflate), they will rise a bit as well.

Making Coins during Winter Upgrades

The real money maker in this equation comes with the opportunity to snipe the newly released upgraded cards. They will be worth more than their non-upgraded versions because of their higher rating, but many casual FIFA players will not know that.

This provides you with a golden window to snipe upgraded gold cards that are listed on the market at their non-upgraded gold card’s price. As far as investing is concerned, we would stay away from holding these upgraded gold cards long term (for example if you packed one).

This is because, similar to new TOTW cards, once the hype around them dies down, they usually find an equilibrium price that is lower than what they are initially.

How many FUT players will receive a winter upgrade in FIFA 17?

We expect you will see over 400 players receive upgraded stats.

How much do winter upgrades increase a players stats by?

Typically gold cards increase by 1 or 2 OVR, Silver and Bronzes by 4 or 5 OVR. However, there have been occasions in the past where players receive significantly greater upgrades if their original card was way below what their recent performances suggest.

Will any players receive winter downgrades?

It does seem logical for EA to include FIFA 17 winter downgrades, but we’re pretty sure they won’t feature this year. If enough people within the community get behind this concept it would certainly have a chance at being included and would add another dimension to FUT.

What is an UP player?

An UP player card is just an abbreviation for upgraded player card in FUT. It’s the players non-day 1 released card with upgraded stats and OVR.

Can player’s positions be upgraded in the FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades batch?

Yes, in rare circumstances a players position will be upgraded if he has consistently performed well in his new position.

How long are the FIFA 17 Winter Upgrades available in packs for?

The new UP players are available from their release until the end of the game. The old day-1 version of the players will no longer be available in packs.

Can a player jump from Bronze to Silver or Gold?

Yes! Any jump is possible as long as their real-world performances warrant such an increase in stats.

If a player gets transferred can he still receive an upgrade?

Yes, FIFA 17 Transfers occur first. If the transferred player warrants an upgrade, then their transferred card will see an upgrade.

Can all informs be upgraded, not just the TOTW?

Yes, if the players’ regular card equals or surpasses any inform, then that inform is in line for an upgrade!
